House shows are one of the most magical experiences a group of people can ever have. Being in the comfort of a well-loved home, with the presence of nurturing, embodied, emotionally-connected music, is a ripe atmostphere for deep and nourishing connection. Admitedly, I have not played in very large arenas. I attribute this to the fact that as a highly sensitive person, the conditions needed for my nervous system to feel safe and regulated amidst the unpredictability of bigger stage settings and larger groups are not easily obtained. This may change as I learn what I really need, but for now, the soft and soothing environment provided in a home setting is right where I and my music belong.
It's quite easy! Especially if you already have a community of friends who would enjoy a night of heartfelt music and shared connection. A house concert is not that much different than a potluck or other friendly gathering you'd host. The primary difference of course, is that there needs to be enough seating options for at least 10-15 people. The other difference is that there is a small financial exchange, since this is an event that offers a specific value of music within a curated connection event, for guests who attend.
I've made it incredibly easy for you to host your house concert with an easy-to-follow House Concert Hosting Guide to set things up on your end to prepare for having a successful experience.
The best times for me to perform at house shows are weekend nights. Because my career as a therapist keeps me full with client work during the weekdays, early evenings on Saturday and Sunday are when my musical energy is most alive and well. A typical schedule I've seen work well is ARRIVE TIME @ 6pm, SHOW BEGINS @ 7pm, EVENING ENDS @ 9pm.
Here are some examples of past performances in smaller rooms or outside areas. These may provide some inspiration for what a house show in a beautiful home space can look and feel like.
